Nice headphones, but the headband piece is Cheap crap. I've had mine for about 2 years now, and the headband piece has snapped in 2 places. The headphones themselves sound great, but for the price you pay for them, they need to up the quality of the build. I will probably not purchase another Focal product because of it.

Hi, thanks for such a clear and insightful review. it's so difficult to make a purchasing decision on something so subjective as audio quality/enjoyment. I have some ageing Sennheiser HD340s which have developed an intermittent fault. I appreciate their ability to deliver a rich and non fatiguing and open airy/presentation. Like others, I hanker after "more" and was strongly tempted by these but you seem to be saying that they are weakest in the very areas that I value. I'm worried about the Beyer 1990s due to the brightness and high impedance. I do have a good hifi but would be mostly using headphones driven by a MacBook Pro M1 without an off board amp. I'm now leaning more towards the Sennheiser 660s which I can pick up used or open box in the UK for 300GBP. Do you think the MacBook will power them adequately or would I get a better experience (in my application) with a lower impedance planar?

I tried Diana MR and they were horrible. Pad swapped, different amps, no help. I don’t think these will improve.

I use these black wall hangers from ikea. They work great and I just coil the cable around them

I got the abolone and it's gorgeous! Love headphones that can also be a statement piece.

I got the old blue 600 and also an Hd800, the musical an balanced sound is real nice on not so high end sources. The HD800 only shines when the rest is perfect.

The review is completely biased. Yes, sennheiser wanted to be bold with the statement "closed back hd6 serie model" but the reviewer has the responsibility to compare them againist the other closed back cans. Picking up every little difference they have from the most tonally accurate open hp's in the world is a bit unfair. Saying that they can be compared to that abomination of audeze wireless monster (the most nasal, lifeless and unaccurate experience i had from a so well praised pair I've ever heard) is another lie. They can be boxy if not correctly weared. On my average head they seal well but only at the final click of the arm extension mechanism. So, maybe you have a bigger head and in this case , better not to judge a pair you can't have a seal with. The pistolero reviewer knows better how to manage opinions. The mannequin friend evidently can't wear these, and the big felin is launching his own. Please be fair. I want to trust you guys, but remain unbiased.

The Abalone Shell is amazing - If I could afford one that would be my choice. Also the best test would be the Abyss Headphone Test featuring world's best triangle guy!

I got into a car accident in 2022 and had to sell the 1990s to pay for the repairs. I miss it every day. With that being said, it sounds like you do nothing but praise the headphone in the video. You’ve had a very inconsistent opinion of the 1990 ever since your initial review and recommending the 660s2 over this is wild considering, I would argue, they are two different headphones. I think overall though this was a good video, I just wished you either went full into explaining the downsides of the 1990 or just said it was still a good headphone. It comes across like you’re fence sitting.

This brand is so polorizing with the hifi community. I don't get all the revisions and naming schemes. I agree their should be less marketing and more what the sou d of each you should be getting. And than you toss all these different pads. We're audiophiles and will go to great lengths to get good sound but if you can't with the stock pads I'm out and you will loose people . All that said I fully expect another stellar review of abyss headphones from Josh.

Just wondering if you still own the SVS ultra towers. I'm in the market for a set of floorstanders that can render orchestral music decently and the SVS ultras are on my short list along with the Klipsch RP8000f II. I realize you are more of a headphone guy but any response would be appreciated. For myself, I am very satisfied with the Sennheiser 560s. Thanks for all your videos. I'm sure they are a lot of work but they are a pleasure to watch and also to learn from.

Its impossible that you are honest about your impression about these headphones… I have not heard anyone who have heard them say anything nice about them… My friend was at the High end show at München, he said that they were awful. Everyone he talk to said the same… If you really are honest on your opinions about them, serious questions needs to be asked…

I was a big fan of them, would easily take them over anything from hifiman or audeze. Incredibly impressive headphones. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Diana TC or the 1266 but the new MR and DZ have really impressed me.
